Seward & Kissel LLP offers our New York associates the broad experience and training of a large practice in the context of a moderately sized firm. We offer our Washington, D.C. associates a more focused experience concentrating on our Investment Management, Corporate Finance and Capital Markets and Regulatory practices in the context of a collegial, small-office environment.

Our associates have the opportunity to work on a wide range of challenging and stimulating matters within the practice areas of our particular offices. Seward & Kissel provides opportunities to those wishing to develop a specific area of expertise, and to those wishing to leverage their experience across a broad range of industries.

A basic tenet of working at Seward & Kissel is having a balanced lifestyle. We recognize the importance of, and encourage having balance in, your personal and professional life. Our attorneys foster a congenial and supportive firm environment, doors are always open, and colloquy is actively encouraged.

Hiring Criteria

Seward & Kissel is selective in its hiring standards. We look to hire outstanding students and lawyers. We are interested in well-rounded, mature individuals of demonstrated intellectual capacity and promising legal ability who can quickly assume a share of the Firm’s responsibilities. These individuals will have shown excellence and initiative in their college and law school academics, as well as in their extracurricular activities.

The Firm makes commitments for employment to outstanding graduates who may have judicial clerkship obligations even though such obligations may defer commencement of their employment.

Training and Continuing Legal Education

Each associate works with particular partners who are responsible for the associate’s training and growth as an attorney; this is one of the most important responsibilities of our partners. The goals of this supervision are both to instruct each associate in the day-to-day practice of law and to direct the development of the associate’s areas of expertise. These goals are attained through selection of assignments, project-by-project review and constructive feedback. Formal performance reviews are conducted at least annually. Lawyers, paralegals and summer associates in each department meet regularly to discuss current developments and matters in progress.

We supplement on-the-job training with formal seminars and training programs that are conducted periodically by each department, as well as encouraging attendance at programs provided by continuing legal education organizations. In addition, we routinely send our lawyers to industry conferences and events.

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to their regular compensation and six weeks of paid time off, the Firm provides associates with many benefits, including:

  • Contributory health, dental and eye coverage;
  • Firm sponsored group life insurance and additional contributory group life insurance for employee, spouse and children;
  • Long-term and short-term disability insurance coverage;
  • Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts;
  • Additional contributory benefits offered through UNUM and Aflac;
  • Full reimbursement for bar review and continuing legal education fees, and partial reimbursement for membership in organized bar associations.
