Carmella O’Hanlon is an associate in the Firm’s Litigation and Investigations Group. Carmella represents both companies and individuals in civil and criminal investigations and enforcement actions brought by the DOJ, SEC, FINRA and other regulators. She also represents clients in complex commercial litigation and arbitrations across a range of industries including financial services, securities, and admiralty/maritime.

As a member of the Firm’s Economic Sanctions and Cross-Border Regulatory Practice, Carmella also regularly advises clients on matters relating to economic sanctions administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), export controls, and anti-boycott regulations.

Carmella has represented clients in depositions and appeared in federal and state court proceedings in a first-chair capacity. She is a frequent contributor to Seward & Kissel’s blog, and has also been published in legal publications including Law360. Carmella also regularly provides pro bono services for not-for-profit institutions and indigent clients.

She received a J.D. from Boston College Law School, where she served as an Articles Editor for the Boston College Law Review, and a B.A. cum laude from College of the Holy Cross.


Representative Experience
  • Represented vessel owner in a limitation action in the District of Massachusetts against claims of personal injuries and property damage arising from a vessel collision in Greece.
  • Defended vessel owner in a proceeding in the High Court of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and obtained dismissal on the ground of forum non conveniens arising from an April 2021 ship collision in the port of Qingdao, China.
  • Represented charterer in connection with contract dispute concerning the allocation of loss arising from a cargo fire aboard the owner’s vessel.
